Effective STEM schools typically have the following components: Personalization of Learning; Problem-Based Learning; Rigorous Learning; Career, Technology, and Life Skills; School Community and Belonging; External Community; Staff Foundations; and External Factors.

Additionally, STEM schools often emphasize hands-on learning, integrating subject-level content in math and science and using engineering design principles to challenge students to develop higher-order thinking skills.
